A Typo Landed an Innocent Gamer in Prison for 18 Months

Police investigating a Wisconsin child-luring case asked Kik for records on the wrong username, which led them to Brandon Klayme in Nova Scotia instead of the actual suspect.

Klayme was arrested, convicted in 2023, and spent 18 months in prison, even though investigators found no incriminating evidence on his devices.

During appeal, the username typo was uncovered, and the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal ruled that Klayme was factually innocent and overturned the conviction.

The case underscores how a one-character mistake in digital evidence handling can wrongly charge, convict, and imprison an innocent person.
