Tohoku University and SoftBank move to deploy disaster-prevention AI in society

Tohoku University and SoftBank will establish a joint research lab for disaster AI inside Tohoku University.

The lab will combine disaster data with AI, including large language models and vision-language models, to support response to earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and volcanic disasters.

After pilot tests with local governments, the partners aim to develop and deploy an AI platform that can improve prediction, evacuation decisions, and relief logistics.

The effort is expected to help municipalities and disaster-response teams make faster, better decisions and speed up mitigation and recovery.
