The Reason Fans Hated This Controversial Transformers Movie Is Why They Love It Now

Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment will rerelease the 1986 Transformers: The Movie in U.S. theaters Sept. 17–21, 2026, with some international showings, for its 40th anniversary.

The rollout is part of a playful year-long “apology tour” from Hasbro, nodding to the film’s original backlash over major character deaths, especially Optimus Prime.

Once criticized for its dark tone, the movie was later embraced through nostalgia, VHS viewings, and comparison with later live-action Transformers films.
