Google Killed Geofence Warrants. SCOTUS Heard One Anyway

The Supreme Court heard arguments in Chatrie v. United States, its first geofence-warrant case.

The case stems from a 2019 robbery investigation that used a Google geofence warrant to identify nearby devices.

The legal fight could define constitutional limits on location-based digital searches under the Fourth Amendment.

But Google has already changed Location History so it no longer stores the data needed to answer these warrants, making the tool largely unusable going forward.
