Colombia awards 995MW of solar power, with batteries included for the first time in long-term contracts

Colombia’s mining and energy ministry closed a clean-energy long-term contract auction, securing 995 MW of solar and about 100 MW of battery storage.

The awarded projects include standalone solar and solar-plus-battery systems under 15-year contracts.

Power delivery is set to begin in 2030, and storage was included in a clean-energy bid for the first time.

Battery storage should help smooth solar volatility and improve resilience to price swings and El Niño.

The volume equals roughly 3% of Colombia’s regulated power-market demand, making it a meaningful step for grid stability.
