Hitachi's "HMAX": Sensors collect data, AI analyzes it to streamline maintenance and other operations

Hitachi is expanding HMAX, an AI maintenance solution for railways that collects operating data from onboard sensors and analyzes it to improve upkeep.

The system aims to extend bearing replacement intervals and automate visual inspections, helping rail operators reduce labor and maintenance burden.

By combining sensors and AI, HMAX supports predictive maintenance and more efficient rail operations amid workforce shortages and aging infrastructure.

Hitachi is also working with partners including Nvidia and a UK company to broaden the service, while trials with Tobu Railway are underway.
