Routing Confusion, US Now Allowing Foreign Router Updates Until 2029 - PC Perspective

The FCC has clarified its foreign hardware restrictions to allow some existing routers and WiFi hotspots to keep receiving firmware and software updates until 2029.

This softens earlier broad restrictions and exemptions that had raised concerns about whether deployed devices would be cut off from updates.

Keeping updates available helps patch security holes in already-installed consumer networking gear instead of leaving it permanently vulnerable.

The change is especially relevant for devices from companies such as TP-Link, as well as other networking hardware tied to the FCC’s review.
