Japan’s deep-sea drilling vessel Chikyu recovered rare-earth-bearing sediments near Minamitorishima at about 6,000 meters depth, marking a major milestone.

The sample collection supports Japan’s long-term effort to secure critical minerals after China’s 2010 export cutoff exposed supply risks.

Tokyo has been diversifying suppliers, boosting recycling and alternative materials, stockpiling minerals, and backing overseas mines to reduce dependence on China.

The find could strengthen Japan’s access to metals vital for electronics, EVs, defense systems, and other advanced industries.
