EU demands Facebook and Instagram dismantle 'addictive' design features

The European Commission has preliminarily found Meta may be breaching the Digital Services Act with addictive design features on Facebook and Instagram.

Regulators said infinite scroll, autoplay, notifications, and recommendation systems were not adequately assessed for risks to users’ mental and physical wellbeing.

The Commission is pushing Meta toward structural changes and could fine the company up to 6% of global annual revenue if the finding is confirmed.

The case could set a major EU precedent for platform safety enforcement and force significant changes to how Facebook and Instagram are designed.
