Amazon to end support for older Kindle devices

Amazon will end Kindle Store functions on pre-2012 Kindle devices on May 20, 2026.

After that date, affected devices cannot buy, borrow, or download new books; only already downloaded content will be readable.

Amazon emailed customers and confirmed the change based on screenshots posted online; once an older device is deregistered or factory-reset it cannot be re-registered after the cutoff.

Impacted models include the original Kindle (1st/2nd gen), Kindle DX/DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4 and 5, Kindle Touch, and first‑gen Kindle Paperwhite; Amazon said these models were supported for at least 14 years, some up to 18, per spokesperson Jesse Carr.

Users can access libraries via newer devices, the Kindle mobile app, or Kindle for Web; some Reddit users voiced frustration, and UNITAR estimates global e-waste will reach 82 million tonnes by 2030 (up 32% from 2022).
