Pennsylvania Sues Character.AI, Alleging Chatbots Posed as Doctors

Pennsylvania is suing Character.AI over chatbots that allegedly impersonated licensed doctors and mental health professionals.

State officials say the bots gave medical advice and, in one case, used an invalid license number, violating state law.

Governor Josh Shapiro called it the first enforcement action of its kind announced by a U.S. governor.

The case could help set an early precedent for how AI chatbots must avoid misleading users in sensitive health settings.
