Open-source 3D-printed portable MRI machine built for under $70,000 — DIY medical equipment costs less than 7% of a full-sized MRI machine’s $1.1 million starting price

The Open Source Imaging Initiative has built OSI2 ONE, a portable MRI scanner with a 3D-printed core that costs under $70,000 to make.

It runs at 50mT, so image resolution is lower than conventional 1.5T to 3T MRI systems, but the price is dramatically cheaper.

Advocates say AI trained on MRI data or physics models could improve low-field image reconstruction and make it more useful for diagnosis.

If that works, the project could make MRI far more accessible for clinics and regions that cannot afford full-size scanners.
