GitHub takes aim at Claude Code and Codex with its new Copilot app

GitHub launched a technical preview of a standalone Copilot desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

The app centralizes coding agents, issues, pull requests, session history, and repository context in one workspace.

Built on Copilot CLI, it supports multiple agents and side-by-side review, moving Copilot beyond an editor plugin.

The preview is available first to Copilot Business and Enterprise users, with others placed on a waitlist.

The move puts GitHub more directly in competition with autonomous AI coding tools like Claude Code and Codex.
