Scientists Stunned by New Organic Molecules Found on Mars

NASA’s Curiosity rover found more than 20 organic molecules in drilled clay-rich rocks in Gale Crater’s Glen Torridon region.

The mix includes a newly detected nitrogen-bearing compound and sulfur-rich molecules such as benzothiophene, hinting at complex chemistry.

Researchers say the results do not prove life; the molecules could have come from biology, geology, or meteorites.

The finding supports the idea that Mars can preserve organic material for billions of years and helps inform future sample-return missions.
