2,500-ton attack submarine edges closer to Taiwan Navy service after completing trials

Taiwan’s indigenous Hai Kun submarine completed its 15th sea trial and ninth submerged test after weather delayed an earlier run.

Officials say the prototype still needs seaworthiness, deep-diving, and overnight checks before delivery, possibly between next month and September.

The progress moves Taiwan closer to fielding its first domestically built operational attack submarine.

Taiwan is also preparing to field MK 48 Mod 6 heavyweight torpedoes to strengthen its undersea deterrence.
