OpenAI could be making a phone with AI agents replacing apps

OpenAI is reportedly exploring a smartphone with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

The device would be built around AI agents that handle tasks directly, reducing reliance on traditional apps.

The plan may use a custom hardware stack that combines on-device AI with cloud models.

If it happens, mass production could begin in 2028, marking OpenAI’s push into consumer hardware.

Such a move could challenge the app-centered ecosystem dominated by Apple and Google.
