Massive Study Warns Marijuana Use in Teens Is Linked to Serious Mental Illness

A large longitudinal study found that teen cannabis use was linked to higher rates of psychotic, bipolar, depressive, and anxiety disorders by young adulthood.

Researchers analyzed health records from 463,396 adolescents ages 13 to 17 and found roughly double the risk of later psychotic and bipolar disorders.

The findings add to evidence that adolescent marijuana use may increase the risk of serious mental illness later in life.

The study supports prevention efforts, screening, and clearer youth-focused public health messaging.
