Scientists Are Turning Empty Roadsides Into Butterfly Habitats

Researchers and transportation officials in North Florida are planting thousands of native milkweed plants along highway roadsides to create connected habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators.

The project shows how roadside rights-of-way can be used to restore pollinator habitat and support monarch conservation without needing new protected lands.

Florida DOT, the Florida Museum of Natural History, and the University of Illinois Chicago are involved, with Jaret Daniels helping lead the effort.

By turning managed roadsides into a conservation corridor, the effort offers a scalable model for pollinator habitat restoration.
