Cyberattacks by advanced AI are an "imminent crisis," says Finance Minister Katayama; countermeasures discussed at public-private working group

Japan’s finance minister and top banking officials agreed to set up a public-private task force to strengthen defenses against cyberattacks that abuse generative AI.

The meeting included the Bank of Japan, major banks, and the Japan Exchange Group, with participants sharing a strong sense of urgency about AI-driven threats.

The new effort aims to build an industry-wide response before advanced attacks can disrupt financial markets, infrastructure, or trust in the system.
