Virginia voter support for nearby data centers has fallen sharply, with just 35% comfortable now versus 69% in 2023.

Prince William County has dropped its appeals to salvage the 2,100-acre Digital Gateway project after courts voided its rezoning approvals.

That effectively ends the 37-building hyperscale development planned by QTS and Compass Datacenters.

The backlash signals rising resistance to large data center builds in Virginia, which could slow AI and cloud infrastructure expansion and push investment elsewhere.
