Spain has hundreds of abandoned silos. Extremadura has found the perfect technology to turn them into batteries

Extremadura has launched THESILO, a cross-border project to repurpose abandoned grain silos for thermal energy storage.

In Torremocha, a silo ceded by the city council will test technology that converts surplus renewable electricity into heat.

The pilot will assess whether the stored heat can be used in nearby industry and buildings, helping reduce renewable power curtailment.

Backed by partners including Red Eléctrica de España, CIIAE and Interreg POCTEP, the project also promotes rural reuse and circular economy.
