Huawei proposes a ‘Tau Scaling Law’ to replace Moore’s Law, aiming to achieve density equivalent to a 1.4nm process by 2031

At IEEE ISCAS 2026, Huawei unveiled a new semiconductor growth metric called the “Tau Scaling Law,” based on the time constant τ rather than Moore’s law.

The company said technologies such as LogicFolding and UnifiedBus will raise performance and density across its chip and system stack.

Huawei aims to reach density comparable to 1.4nm nodes by 2031, signaling a long-term roadmap despite sanctions and supply-chain limits.

The move reframes how chip progress can be measured and forecast, with implications for Huawei’s continued advanced-chip development.
