Barcelona has become a war zone: one where snipers and drones are eliminating thousands of wild boars

Catalonia has launched a major sanitary operation to contain African swine fever near Barcelona after infected wild boars were detected in November 2025.

The Generalitat set up a controlled perimeter with fences, drones, canine units, hunters and more than 1,900 personnel to find and cull thousands of boars.

The goal is to stop the virus from spreading into nearby areas such as Collserola and Cerdanyola and protect pig farms and biosecurity.

The outbreak could threaten Spain’s pork industry and export markets, making wildlife control a large-scale emergency response.
