Despite AI hype, Google's data shows workers aren't automating themselves away

Google research suggests Gemini is augmenting work more than replacing it, with only 21% of work tasks qualifying as meaningful Gemini tasks.

About 29% of occupations showed no relevant Gemini task usage above the threshold, and just 3% saw Gemini used for most tasks.

AI use was concentrated in cognitive work and tended to assist specific parts of jobs rather than automate them end to end.

The findings temper broad claims of rapid white-collar job automation and point to a slower, uneven labor-market impact.
