Florida sues OpenAI, Sam Altman, in first-of-its-kind lawsuit over violent incidents

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, alleging ChatGPT caused or contributed to violent incidents, self-harm, and other harms.

The state says OpenAI ignored safety warnings and failed to adequately prevent dangerous chatbot behavior.

The lawsuit follows a criminal probe into ChatGPT’s alleged role in a Florida State University shooting.

The case could help define whether AI companies can be held legally liable for harms linked to chatbot use.
