A New Hantavirus Vaccine Is in the Works

Moderna said it has been developing an mRNA hantavirus vaccine since 2023 with Korea University’s Vaccine Innovation Center.

The disclosure came as concern grew after a hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius Dutch cruise ship.

Early mouse data suggest the candidate can block infection, raising hope for a new preventive option.

A successful vaccine could address a major gap, since hantavirus can cause severe, often fatal disease and no licensed vaccine exists in major regions.
