A Hong Kong City University team built a battery-free water-flow sensor inspired by sea urchin spines.

By 3D-printing an artificial spine that mimics the sponge-like stereom structure, the device generated electrical signals when hit by water.

The biomimetic spine produced stronger output than a smooth version, showing the structure itself boosts sensing performance.

The approach could enable real-time monitoring for ocean observation, water resource management, and robotic sensing.
