Cangas City Council paid a €200,000 ransom for a cyberattack. Now one of its councillors is under investigation

Cangas de Morrazo’s town hall paid a ransom of nearly €200,000 in bitcoin after a May 2023 ransomware attack that crippled its systems.

Pontevedra prosecutors have referred the case to court over possible offenses including misconduct, misuse of public funds, computer damage, and coercion.

The investigation is focused on how contracts were awarded without public tender during the crisis.

Judge has summoned councillor Antón Iglesias as a suspect, even though he was not in office when the payment was made; the initial signature was by then-mayor Araceli Gestido.
