OpenAI introduces new ‘Trusted Contact’ safeguard for cases of possible self-harm

OpenAI has introduced Trusted Contact, an optional safety feature for adult ChatGPT users.

If a conversation suggests self-harm, ChatGPT may prompt the user to reach out to someone they trust.

After human review, the system can send a brief alert by email, text, or in-app notification.

OpenAI says the feature is designed to protect privacy while adding another layer of crisis support, alongside existing parental controls and self-harm resources.
