Waymo halts freeway rides after robotaxis struggle in construction zones

Waymo has temporarily suspended freeway robotaxi rides in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Miami.

The pause comes after its vehicles had trouble handling construction zones, and the company is working on a software fix.

Surface-street rides continue to operate, but the change highlights how hard it is to scale autonomous service on high-speed roads.

Waymo has also recently paused service in Atlanta and San Antonio because of flooding-related issues, even as it expands to new cities and tests a new robotaxi model.
