EU launches bid for AI gigafactories to reduce dependence on U.S. cloud services

The EU has launched a tender for up to seven AI gigafactories to expand domestic compute capacity for advanced AI development.

The plan is backed by more than 30 billion euros in public and private investment and aims to reduce reliance on U.S. cloud services.

However, the project will still depend on foreign chip suppliers and large-scale power, cooling, and network infrastructure.

It is part of Europe’s broader push to strengthen regional control over AI infrastructure.
