Scientists Stunned by New Organic Molecules Found on Mars

NASA’s Curiosity rover found more than 20 organic molecules in clay-rich Martian rocks from Gale crater’s Glen Torridon.

The mix includes a DNA-like nitrogen compound and benzothiophene, suggesting ancient carbon may have been preserved for billions of years.

Scientists say the results strengthen evidence that Mars once had habitable conditions and chemistry relevant to life.

But the source of the molecules remains unclear: they could come from biology, geology, or meteorites, and only returned samples can tell.
