Meta wants to power AI data centers with solar energy from space

Meta signed a deal with Overview Energy for up to 1 gigawatt of space-based solar power to support its AI data centers.

Overview still needs to build and test the system, with a demo targeted for 2028 and commercial service expected around 2030.

The agreement gives Meta priority access to future output as it expands its AI power mix with gas and nuclear projects.

The deal highlights how AI infrastructure is driving demand for huge new energy sources, including unproven ones far from deployment.
