Scientists Are Starting to Unlock the Nanoscale Secrets of the Immune System

At WIRED Health, immunologist Daniel Davis said advanced microscopes are revealing immune activity at the nanoscale that was previously invisible.

His lab is studying how immune cells decide whether to attack, including the immunological synapse and signaling between cells.

Davis is also testing engineered antibodies with Bristol Myers Squibb to strengthen activation signals and help immune cells kill cancer cells more effectively.

He noted that immune responses vary widely between people because immune-related genes differ, though personalized immune treatments are still early-stage.
