Like an Ancient 'Turducken': Fossil Captures Cretaceous Sea Monsters Devouring Each Other

A fossil from Australia reveals a rare three-step Cretaceous predator interaction in the Eromanga Sea.

Researchers found pterosaur jaw fragments in a Platypterygius australis stomach, showing the ichthyosaur had eaten a pterosaur.

The ichthyosaur was likely then killed and consumed by a larger apex predator, probably Kronosaurus queenslandicus.

The find provides the first direct evidence of an ichthyosaur eating a pterosaur and then becoming prey itself.
