Skin Damage May Begin Long Before You Can See It

An international team led by Hiroshima University found that dermal collagen’s molecular arrangement and handedness can degrade before standard imaging shows visible thinning or fragmentation.

Using advanced optical and chiroptical techniques, the study showed that collagen quantity and structural order may decline at different rates.

This means early skin aging and tissue damage may be detectable sooner than with conventional imaging.

Published in ACS Nano, the findings could improve how clinicians and researchers monitor skin health and collagen remodeling.
