Keigo Higashino, one of Japan’s most influential mystery writers, died of colorectal cancer on July 23 at age 68, Kodansha announced on July 27.

He was known for bestselling and widely adapted works such as "Galileo," "Journey Under the Midnight Sun" (Byakuyako), and "The Devotion of Suspect X."

Formerly an engineer, Higashino became a novelist and left a major mark on Japanese crime fiction.
