China’s 1116 MWe Taipingling Unit 1 reactor goes online, set to generate 9bn kWh yearly

China General Nuclear Power Group has begun commercial operation of Taipingling Unit 1 in Guangdong.

The 1,116 MWe Hualong One reactor completed commissioning tests and a 168-hour trial run.

It is expected to generate more than 9 billion kWh of electricity a year, helping meet demand in the Greater Bay Area.

The new unit adds major low-carbon baseload power, supporting China’s energy security and emissions-reduction goals.
