Spain is generating electricity almost for free at midday. Your bill is still going to jump 30% in summer

Spain is seeing near-free or even negative midday electricity prices thanks to strong solar generation.

Even so, household summer power bills are expected to rise about 30% because retail bills include taxes and fixed charges, not just market prices.

VAT on electricity and gas has returned to 21%, adding to the cost for consumers.

At night, prices are still pushed up by gas and coal, while heat, weaker hydro support, and lower solar efficiency lift demand and strain supply.

Spain’s marginal power market means a small share of expensive electricity can set the price for the whole system.
