Popular Weight-Loss Drug Wegovy Linked to Sudden Vision Loss

A safety analysis of FDA adverse event reports found a stronger reporting link between Wegovy and ischemic optic neuropathy (ION) than with other semaglutide drugs.

The dataset covered Dec 2017–Dec 2024 and included 31,774 semaglutide-related reports among 30.7 million total reports.

Wegovy had 28 ION reports and showed nearly five times higher ION odds than Ozempic, with the strongest signal in men.

No ION cases were reported for oral Rybelsus, and the authors call for urgent prospective studies to evaluate the dose-dependent risk.
