Google finally explains why Android AICore keeps eating your storage — and it actually makes a lot of sense

Google says Android AICore can temporarily use extra storage because it keeps both the current and previous Gemini Nano models after updates.

The old model may remain on-device for up to three days, giving Android phones a quick rollback option if the new version has problems.

AICore powers on-device AI features on supported Android devices, and the storage behavior had confused users until Google’s explanation.

The company says the tradeoff supports privacy and offline AI use, even though it can briefly reduce available phone storage.
