A developer reverse engineered macOS’s video wallpaper system and open-sourced the project, Phosphene.

Phosphene uses WallpaperExtensionKit.framework plus a companion app to add custom looping videos as desktop wallpapers.

The project supports desktop playback with adaptive rendering, letting users use their own videos beyond the lock screen.

The author chose open source after seeing commercial competition as too strong.
