Scientists Warn The Sun Could Be About To Produce A ‘Superflare’

Scientists say the Sun may be entering a rare superflare phase, with elevated risk during specific periods of Solar Cycle 25.

The study used nearly 50 years of solar observations plus machine learning to build a probabilistic forecast for extreme Earth-directed eruptions.

Researchers linked the pattern to recurring solar rhythms, including magneto-Rossby waves, that may help predict when superflaring is more likely.

A major superflare could damage satellites, disrupt power and communications, and increase hazards for astronauts.

The work, published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, could improve space-weather preparedness for NASA, NOAA, and other operators.
