The US and China are Considering Formal Talks on AI

The US and China are considering formal talks on artificial intelligence, potentially tied to a May 14-15 Trump-Xi summit in Beijing.

Scott Bessent is leading the US side, while China’s Vice Finance Minister Liao Min is involved in the discussions.

The agenda includes AI model misbehavior, autonomous weapons, and misuse of open-source tools by non-state actors.

An AI hotline is also being considered, as both sides look for ways to manage military and security risks from advanced AI.

Earlier Biden-era talks produced limited results, but the two sides later agreed humans should decide on nuclear weapons use.
