Man dies covered in necrotic lesions after amoebas eat him alive

A man developed a rare Acanthamoeba infection that caused progressive necrotic skin lesions and proved fatal.

Doctors suspect the infection may have been linked to sinus rinses and possible environmental exposure in Florida.

The illness was initially mistaken for an autoimmune condition, delaying diagnosis and allowing it to worsen on immunosuppressants.

Yale physicians later confirmed the amoebic infection and used standard therapy plus experimental nitroxoline, which briefly improved his condition before he died.
