US tech helps unmanned surface vessel conduct search mission, spot target autonomously

Shield AI and Taiwan’s Thunder Tiger staged the first Hivemind-enabled autonomous maritime teaming demo in Taiwan.

Several unmanned maritime systems operated together with limited human input, showing autonomous navigation, coordination, and target search.

The trial was conducted in a real-world setting and is part of a broader plan to bring Hivemind to Thunder Tiger’s unmanned platforms.

The demonstration highlights how AI autonomy could keep unmanned naval systems operating in GPS- or communications-denied environments.

It also points to stronger maritime surveillance and more resilient asymmetric defense capabilities for Taiwan.
