Malaysia's Under-16 Social Media Ban Carries Fines Up To $2.5 Million

Malaysia has started enforcing a social media ban for users under 16 on platforms with more than 8 million users in the country.

Companies that fail to comply could face fines of up to 10 million ringgit.

Age verification will roll out over six months, and existing underage accounts get one month to manage their data before restrictions take effect.

The policy could force major platforms, including Meta, to change sign-up and age-check systems.
