Mission-ready Moon excavation system targets 2028 for NASA’s lunar base construction

Interlune and Vermeer are expanding their partnership to build an autonomous lunar excavation and site-preparation system.

The system will integrate with a lunar rover and be tested on Earth before heading to the Moon.

The companies had already shown a prototype in 2025 and are now aiming for mission-ready hardware.

The goal is to support future Moon bases, landing zones, and resource extraction with less astronaut risk.

They are targeting a mission-ready version by 2028 to align with NASA’s lunar infrastructure plans.
