Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is highlighting wildfire smoke and a cyclosporiasis outbreak as evidence of weak public health infrastructure.

The physician and former Detroit health officer says he would seek congressional oversight of the EPA, CDC, and FDA if elected.

He also wants investigations into food-safety and public-data failures that he says put communities at risk.

The interview noted endorsements for his campaign from Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Elizabeth Warren.
