Scientist Thawing Out Fragments of His Friend’s Cryogenically Preserved Brain

L. Stephen Coles’ brain tissue was cryopreserved at about -146 °C in Arizona after his legal death in 2014.

Over a decade later, cryobiologist Greg Fahy performed a biopsy on preserved brain fragments and reported the tissue structure was surprisingly well preserved.

Fahy cautioned the samples showed some damage in a yet-to-be-peer-reviewed paper, and other experts emphasized the brain is not alive.
